The Bridge Initiative and Arizona Theatre Company combine to virtually present The Dalai Lama is Not Welcome Here – a play written by Elaine Romero and directed by AZAA’s very own Maren Mascarelli. This show will be produced as a part of RomeroFest, – a series of shows collected to celebrate the work of the Arizona-based Playwright.

The following synopsis comes from The Bridge Initiative’s Website:

“A drama that chronicles the tragic and complicated interconnection between a Chinese family scrambling in the new economy and the American family who lost their only child because of a contaminated Chinese toy.”

The premise is tense from the outset. Much like Romero’s other plays, it will shine a light on issues of social justice and racial equality – incredibly valuable work in these times of racial tension.

This show will also feature two AZAA-affiliated artists: Mascarelli (who teaches Shakespeare) will direct, and long-time AZAA student Mary-Grace Lim will perform. Congratulations to these two – it will be nice to see them put their training and passion to work.

The show will be available to stream online March 27th and 28th. Don’t miss the chance to see a fresh, local performance in these theater-starved times.

Happy streaming. – PTN
